Realizing I Know Nothing
IKEA Mammut Toddler Bed
After just about two and a half years and a brief stint on an Aerobed (a re view on this gem coming soon), we modified the IKEA Mammut crib into the IKEA Mammut toddler bed. As I have noted in some earlier comments, the crib/bed has held up great — but we were also lucky with the fact our son didn’t gnaw on the railing. We are still in love with this piece and the three drawer chest that is in his room.
A few things:
1. Make sure to read the instructions. Changing the crib into the bed requires removing one of the sides and adding another piece.
2. Small tools and tight angles make this a royal pain.
3. Prepare to have your child sleeping on the floor — not because of falling out — just because they now can.
While making the conversion, I did find out something new about the Mammut series: heat will melt/warp the finish. I put a relatively hot cup of coffee down on the three drawer chest and I now have an assigned seat for my mug.

Thanks for this. We’re hoping to get the Mammut crib when they come back in stock (all IKEA cribs are currently unavailable while they relabel, etc. due to the recent changes to crib safety requirements). IKEA corporate wouldn’t give an ETA, but the Conshohocken store said they’re hoping to have them back around October.

Thanks for letting me know about the hold on cribs. I checked it out and I don’t blame them for pulling them to make sure they comply with the new regulations. I definitely recommend the Mammut series (hopefully they don’t find any issues with it). Don’t get me wrong — bit of a pain to put together and we will look back at the color 30 years from now like we look at the yellows and browns of the 70s, but we like it.
Good luck and congrats!
